Above Ground Flight Pen

From time to time Im asked about the flight pen I use for my bobwhite quail. There are many designs out there on the internet and Im sure each style has its advantages and its disadvantages. The choice you make should be based off of your own research, because in the end the design you chose needs to please you. Do your own research, because no two people are alike and what I like may not necessarily meet your needs.
The first thing you should decide on is whether or not your flight pen will be located on the ground or above the ground. Im sure there are pros and cons to both types, but I chose the above ground pen because I felt it would decrease my chance of losing birds due to disease. Im happy to report that after 8 years I have never had a die off in my flight pen due to disease. However; in my opinion wing feathers of birds kept above ground tend to display more wear than birds of an equal age that are raised on the ground. My birds have always performed up to my expectations, so a little wear on the wing feathers has never really been an issue for me. In my case; Im willing to sacrifice a little performance to ensure my birds stay as healthy as possible.
If you decide on the above ground pen, your next step is finding a spot to put the flight pen. Above ground flight pens are not for everyone but this style affords you location options that are not possible for the typical ground level pen. Land that is hilly, rocky, or subject to flood is most often useless for a ground level pen, but these areas can sometimes work for an above ground pen. Your limitations are not as restrained, so try to utilize a piece of property that you might not otherwise be able to use. I hope you find the information listed within this article useful.
